WEEK 5 - INQUIRY

Yikes!! This week we had Mike from Auckland Zoo visit us at Tamaki Primary. We learnt about all things Pest Eradication ( Riha Rawaho) Whilst these creatures may look very cute, unfortunately these imposters are messing with our native species. Sadly some of our beautiful NZ birds are becoming endangered and are even in danger of going extinct we learnt about all the different ways we can track and trap these creatures and even got to hold dead RODENTS!

  1. Wow, learning about pest species can be fun. There are a lot of possums in the South Island bush. Several people in our class go hunting with parents. While possum skins are soft they have nasty teeth. When you shine a light on possums at night their eyes glow red. We like the way you have added photos to your post. What species of pests do you have around your school. As part of our Hapu Conservation Activities Day we learned how to make tracking tunnels so we can identify the pest species in our playground. Have you thought about doing this? Then you can start doing predator control!
